Inverse reconstruction of fibre orientation in multilayer CFRP using forward FEM and eddy current pulsed thermography

چکیده
Eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT) is an effective non-destructive testing technique for evaluating the integrity and safe operation of conductive composite components such as carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) in aerospace applications. However, since any measures a surface thermal distribution, ECPT does not directly provide comprehensive information at layer level, e.g., about orientation, which instead important indicating possible failures, misalignment, debonding, etc. In this work, it shown how data can be used to both reconstruct layers' orientation estimate electrical conductivity multilayer CFRP samples. This achieved by implementing iterative inversion procedure that processes experimental measurements together with finite element method simulations data. The applied two samples known ply orientations. Firstly, conductivities are estimated early transient response first having visible fibre's orientation. Then, inverse minimizes discrepancy between measured simulated orientations each using conductivity. Further, results validated exploiting feature-based approach reconstructions, i.e. Radon transform. It also found error increases depth due diffusive nature electromagnetic waves.

Pulsed eddy current (PEC) stimulated thermography is proposed as a powerful non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technique, allowing the operator to observe the heating developed from the eddy current distribution in a structure using infrared imaging, detecting defects over a relatively wide area within a short time. Some defects (impact, delamination, disbond or crack) commonly occur in aerospace...

Comparison of Nondestructive Testing Methods on Detection of Delaminations in Composites
Delamination is one of the most common defects in carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) components, such as those used in aircraft and wind turbine blades. To detect delaminations, different NDT methods such as ultrasonic (UT), eddy current (EC) scanning, flash thermography, and recent developed pulsed-eddy-current-(PEC-) simulated thermography are conducted for comparison and evaluation of th...
